DIY: Growing Green Onions

In my off-time, I peruse Pinterest quite avidly. I came across this pin last week and knew I had to try it out! Not only is it a great way to save money, but I've been wanting to start growing my own herbs and vegetables for a while. The great thing is, even though it is still gloomy and not so sunny in Boston, the green onions continue to grow.

All you have to do is save the bottom bulb portion of the green onions, place them in a jar, and fill the jar with water. And presto! They start growing! I've been changing the water every 2-3 days, and the onions have been growing wonderfully. See below!

If you look at the shortest green onions, I added them to the bunch this morning! See how quickly they grow?

DIY: Infused Vodka

As a Christmas gift this year, my boyfriend and I thought it would be fun to infuse our own vodka. There's so much room for creativity and exotic flavors that this was something we really enjoyed doing. It's a simple process that generally takes 3-5 days (longer if you're looking for more intense flavors)

1) Choose your alcohol base
2) Choose what flavors your would like to infuse your alcohol with. We chose to stick with a minimal 2 flavors so that the flavors would still be distinct
3) Place the alcohol and chosen flavors in an airtight jar
4) Shake the jar a few times a day so the flavors disperse evenly..
5) Taste the vodka every day or every few days to see how the flavors come along
6) Once the flavors have reached its peak during infusion, use a cheesecloth (a coffee filter works as well, though it will take longer) to strain the remnants of the fruits/vegetables/herbs
7) Enjoy!

The Beginning - We decided on doing a Blueberry Vanilla Vodka and a Strawberry Pineapple Vodka

Day 1, aka 24 hours after the picture above. It was so cool to see the color come out of the blueberries and strawberries!
